Two Colors Cupcakes

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Two Colors Cupcakes are a delightful and visually appealing dessert that combines the best of both chocolate and vanilla worlds in one delectable treat. These cupcakes feature a mesmerizing swirl of chocolate and vanilla cake batters, resulting in a beautiful two-tone effect once baked. Topped with a luscious strawberry buttercream and adorned with a fresh strawberry, these cupcakes not only taste amazing but also add a pop of color to any dessert table or celebration.

The concept of creating two-tone or two colors cupcakes is a creative twist on the classic single-flavor cupcakes. While the specific history of these particular cupcakes is not known, the art of marbling or swirling different batters together in baked goods is not a new concept. Marbling has been used in various culinary creations, including cakes and cookies, for many years.

The popularity of two colors cupcakes likely emerged from the desire to create visually striking desserts that showcase multiple flavors in an eye-catching way. Bakers and home cooks started experimenting with different cake batters and frosting combinations, and thus, the two colors cupcakes were born.

These cupcakes not only appeal to the taste buds but also provide a unique and fun experience for those enjoying them. The combination of chocolate and vanilla in the cake batter offers a delightful contrast in flavors, while the strawberry buttercream adds a burst of fruity sweetness.

INGREDIENTS

Chocolate Cake:

  • 1 Box Devil’s Food Cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Vanilla Cake:

  • 1 Box White Cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract

Strawberry Buttercream:

  • 2 cups butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup strawberry puree
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 6-8 cups powdered sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) and line pans with cupcake liners.
  2. Sift both the Devil’s Food Cake mix and the White Cake mix into two separate bowls and set them aside.

Chocolate Cake:

  1. In a large bowl, combine eggs, oil, milk, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Add the Devil’s Food Cake mix and stir until the batter is smooth.

Vanilla Cake:

  1. In another large bowl, combine eggs, oil, milk, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Add the White Cake mix and stir until the batter is smooth.
  2. Place a small scoop of chocolate batter on one side of each cupcake liner. Then, place a small scoop of vanilla batter next to the chocolate batter, creating a two-tone effect in each liner.
  3. Bake the cupcakes for 16-20 minutes or until an inserted knife comes out clean, indicating that the cupcakes are fully baked.

Strawberry Buttercream:

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter for 2 minutes until it becomes light and fluffy. Scrape down the bowl and beat again to ensure an even texture.
  2. Add the strawberry puree and vanilla extract to the butter and mix until well combined.
  3. Slowly add powdered sugar to the butter mixture, 1 cup at a time, until you reach your desired consistency for the buttercream.

Assembling the Cupcakes:

  1. Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, pipe the strawberry buttercream onto each cupcake using your preferred piping tip.
  2. Top each cupcake with a fresh strawberry to add a finishing touch and enhance the fruity flavor.
