Aloha Burgers

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Aloha Burgers are a delicious and unique twist on the classic American burger, infused with the flavors of the Hawaiian islands. This mouthwatering creation combines savory grilled beef patties with sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce, grilled pineapple, and other delectable toppings. The Aloha Burger captures the essence of Hawaii’s culinary heritage and tropical ingredients.

Hawaiian cuisine is known for its diverse cultural influences, blending elements from Polynesia, Asia, and the Americas. The fusion of flavors creates a vibrant and flavorful culinary tradition unique to the islands. The use of teriyaki sauce in this burger reflects the Japanese influence on Hawaiian cuisine, as teriyaki is a popular cooking technique in both cultures.

The addition of pineapple to the burger is a nod to Hawaii’s abundant pineapple plantations, which have played a significant role in the islands’ history and economy. Pineapple has become a symbol of Hawaii and is widely used in many traditional dishes, including the iconic Hawaiian pizza. Its natural sweetness and tropical flair make it a perfect complement to the savory components of the Aloha Burger.

PREP/TOTAL TIME: 30 MIN.

MAKES: 4 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 can (8 ounces) sliced pineapple
  • ¾ cup reduced-sodium teriyaki sauce
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large sweet onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 sesame seed or onion buns, split and toasted
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 bacon strips, cooked

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Drain the juice from the can of sliced pineapple into a small bowl. Add the teriyaki sauce to the pineapple juice. Place 3 tablespoons of this mixture in a resealable plastic bag. Add the pineapple slices to the bag and toss to coat them. Set aside.
  2. Shape the ground beef into four patties and place them in an 8-inch square baking dish. Pour the remaining teriyaki sauce mixture over the patties, ensuring they are well coated. Allow the patties to marinate for 5-10 minutes, turning them once.
  3. Drain and discard the teriyaki marinade from the patties. Grill the patties, covered, over medium heat, or broil them 4 inches from the heat source for 6-9 minutes on each side. Cook them until a thermometer inserted reads 160°F and the juices run clear.
  4. Meanwhile, in a small skillet, sauté the sliced onion in butter until tender, approximately 5 minutes. Set the sautéed onions aside.
  5. Drain and discard the marinade from the pineapple slices. Place the pineapple on the grill or under the broiler to heat through.
  6. Assemble the burgers by layering lettuce and sautéed onions on the bottom half of the toasted buns. Place the cooked burgers on top, followed by a slice of Swiss cheese, a grilled pineapple slice, and a strip of cooked bacon. Finally, top the burgers with the remaining bun halves.

The result is a tantalizing Aloha Burger bursting with flavors and textures. The combination of the juicy beef patty, the sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce, the grilled pineapple, and the other toppings creates a symphony of tastes that transport you to the tropical paradise of Hawaii. Enjoy these delicious burgers with a side of fries or a tropical salad for a complete island-inspired meal. Aloha!
